MTHFR and folic acid diagram

This is the diagram that helped me the most:

  1. Hi there! I was recently diagnosed homozygous MTHFR for A1298C at 6 weeks pregnant. I have had 3 previous miscarriages. I'm still currently pregnant at 9 weeks 3 days. This is the first pregnancy that I've seen any fetal growth at all - and even a strong healthy heartbeat! My only concern is, my doctors put me on a special prenatal that has synthetic folic acid and the methylated folate both. I'm nervous because everything I'm reading is telling me to stay away the synthetic version this at all costs. I just recently purchased the "Seeking Health" prenatal that does not contain the synthetic version. I'm going to start taking that tomorrow. Do you think that it is too late for this to be a healthy pregnancy? I'm worried that I did not start this in time for everything to be ok :(

    1. A really good prenatal is Thorne.

From my studies, it seems that folic acid is worse for 677T (which I am), so hopefully you'll be OK. I'd definitely stop taking FA though.

I'll post a link to medication I was on.

Here's a link to my medication. There is loads of really good info on this blog, I've been obsessive with research and posted all the good stuff here.

Best of luck with the pregnancy. Please do keep me updated.

  2. Hi Lisa, I have stumbled across your blog and am really inspired by your story. I have heterozygous mutation on both genes and am 7 weeks into my 4th pregnancy (no kids yet). I have also had to educate myself on the best form of folate as my ob/gyn doesn't seem to know so much in this area either. I'm currently taking my kind organics pre-natal multi which has 800 mcg folate. My gynae originally recommended 5,000 mcg folic acid, but when I told her I was taking folate, she said I should still take the same dosage. Can that be right? I've seen online that most doctors recommend 5 mg of folic acid for those with MTHFR but surely the manufacturers of the methylated pre-natals have the right dosage of folate in mind for those pregnant ladies with MTHFR. Appreciate your perspective on this, thanks Natalie

    1. Based on research I've done, people with MTHFR should not take folic acid, rather they should take 5methylfolate. Folic acid is bad for us. It can't be absorbed by our body but worse it blocks receptors in the brain so body can't absorb natural folate.

  3. Thanks Lisa. Did you feel the need to top up your folate intake, beyond what was in your prenatals? So happy you have a little one after everything you've been through!

    1. Yeah, we are so happy. Can't believe we finally got there. She's so cute. I'll post some more photos.

In terms of the folate, I had x3 sources of it.
      1. In the prenatal
      2. The liquid form of of 5methelfolate (teaspoon daily)
      3. High intake of spinach and high folate foods

I went out of my way to not eat anything with folic acid in.
I also went on an organic diet. My natropath said, because my methylation system struggles (due to MTHFR), my body finds it hard to get rid of toxins. So organic diet is important. Also cautious of eating things with metals in, like tuna and deep sea fish.

    2. Blueberries, apparently, are one of the only foods with 5methylfolate in. So they are really good for you. Organic ones. Xx
